Question: Does the sun collect more gas each year or does it loose more?

Keywords: ,

  1. The sun is losing mass for two reasons: First, the hydrogen atoms are being converted to helium and some of the mass is converted directly into energy that escapes as sunlight (Einstein’s famous equation E=mc^2 means that Energy E can be converted into mass m and vice versa). Second, all of that energy also just pushes some of the atoms of the sun outward in what is called the “solar wind”. The magnetic field of the sun also contributes to pushing particles out in this wind.
