I spent five years helping to build the camera, and it just started working last year. I think it there were at least five years of work before I even started on the project though, when people were making calculations to see if their ideas would even work, and submitting funding proposals to the government to get the money to pay for the construction and so on. So overall, I would say it was at least a decade in the making.
