Answer is we don’t know. We are still discovering new species of plant and animal, and there are lots of places we haven’t even looked yet. There will still be new ones for you to discover when you are older.

@abc123: Somewhere between 3-30million! Probably around 9million… but many have not yet been discovered – maybe you’ll go and discover some? My friend, Phil Torres (who used to be a model and catches butterflies) works in the Amazon discovering animals – it’s a pretty cool science job!

Thats one of those questions like ‘how long is a piece of string’…. maybe :s
The crazy thing is that the way we used to compare one animal to another can change. The type of science that describes how one animal is different to another is called Taxonomy. Sometimes their rules change which means that a new type of animal can be named that was thought to be something already known. Makes life confusing for zoologists and biologists sometimes.
