Question: How many total complete dog breeds are there?

  1. @lochlantaylor: Hi! Around 350 separate domestic dog breeds have been identified and recognised around the world. This doesn’t include the wild dog groups such a new guinea singing dog or dingo. Do you have a favourite? 🙂

  2. Note that these are breeds – their differences have been selected by people for a purpose – to help control sheep, find birds that had been shot down, fight off wolves, crawl down holes, fight other dogs or even fight bulls – or more recently for certain appearances (poodles, lap-dogs).
This selection process has sometimes been bad for the dogs – some breeds are notoriously aggressive or have bad hips or have easily upset stomachs, for example.
They are not different species; any dog can breed with any other and the result is likely to be a better, stronger dog.

  1. Some ” Named” dogs such as the kelpy has other dogs such as border collie in it, so its hard to tell if some are ” Thoroughbred”
