Question: why is earth on a tilt

Keywords: ,

  1. One source I looked at said the reason is not known for certain. It is likely that weight was uneven and caused to axis to wobble. Or it may have been struck by another planet when the Solar System was forming.
The Earths Axis still wobbles. Its tilt is now about 23.5 degrees. It has been as high as 24 degrees and is decreasing slowly at present.
And it is just as well it is tilted. The tilt causes the seasons and we could not survive without them.

  2. So @peter suggests that we only exist because of a huge interpanetary accident! How amazing! Maybe we should run around bumping into other planets to see what happens. 😉

  3. I understand that it was thought to be in the early stages of formation when Earth had a collision with another object forming in space, leading to the tilt. I’m sure Kyler will have a good answer.

  4. I’m leaving this one to @Kyler – he’s sure to know! 🙂

  5. Our best understanding is that the tilt was probably caused by the impact of a large object — almost, but not quite as big as Mars — with Earth. We are fairly certain we got our moon that way, so it could explain Earth’s tilt that causes the seasons as well. But the other planets have tilts as well, and we have no idea if they were subject to collisions as well.
