Question: how do we actually know if dogs are colour blind?

Keywords: ,

  1. @amberhassett: Hi again! We know quite a bit about how dogs see because of the structures in their eyes and how it compares to ours and other animals.

Check out this website for lots of information about dog vision:

  2. DOgs are not colour blind, although they do see colours differently to us (Mia answered a question on that earlier).
We know they can see colour because we are able to find the colour receptors in their eyes. We can also give them a colour blindness test. I imagine you would train the dog to bark when it sees a certain pattern, then show it the pattern in different colours, rather like a human colour blindness test (you have probably had one, they ask you to trace a path through the coloured dots or read a number lost in coloured dots).
